James F. Baxley Bio

As a Veteran we have made so many sacrifices in our lives to provide protection for this great nation. As a veteran we go from 100 to zero at least that is what happened to me. I retired from the Army as the combatives instructor for Fort Wainwright, Ak in 2015 with the hopes of something different. I went back home to absolutely nothing with no intent of something in the future. The thought process was to live on retirement and basically just work through life. That put me into a state of depression because I had a lot of time on my hands which allowed me to think and that was not something I wanted to do which led me to drink. One morning I woke up and I found a BJJ school in Clayton, NC and I signed up for the free week. I met a lot of good people, and the training was good for me because I forgot that I am warrior. Meaning, people who sign up for the infantry are different than the other MOS in the military. We have a need to protect the sheep in the world and those that train BJJ are not the sheep they are the Sheep Dogs that keep the wolves at bay. The community within BJJ/Combatives is the same as that in the military because most of the time we have the same mindset. This interaction pushed me to work out again get back into the fight which led me to contracting overseas, and then as a Defensive Tactics instructor for federal agents. Training supports many avenues in everyday life in that the dedication it takes to go and train every week is no different than waking up at 0500 to do pt. The only difference is now you have a choice one can choose to be a sheep or one can still train, I choose to train not just for my job but for my mental health as well. Each person that has served needs to have goals it gives us purpose. Give yourself a challenge and reach for that blue belt, then purple, brown belt and then over time before you know it you will be a black belt. Having an organization like this helps us mentally and physically through the brother hood it provides with the results you achieve.
